As you may have already discovered, dental emergencies aren’t exactly fun. Whether your child has just chipped a tooth or a tooth knocked out of the socket from an injury, dental emergencies can put a damper on the day, especially if your child is frightened from the trauma. Fortunately, there are a few basic first-aid tips you can use if your child finds themselves in the middle of a dental emergency.
Apply First Aid
The first thing that any Dentist will tell you to do is to care for the lost tooth immediately after the emergency occurs. Whether that simply means making sure that a chipped tooth doesn’t chip any further, or if it means that you’re looking for your child’s lost tooth, please do all you can to properly care for it. The more you can stabilize the tooth and the injury at the outset, the easier it’ll be for Dr. Armand Begian to restore your child’s smile back to its former appearance.
Preserve a Lost Tooth
Be careful to pick up the tooth by the crown and not the roots to prevent further damage. Handle the top of the tooth gently and place it into a solution to keep it moist, such as milk, your child’s saliva or a tooth preservation container if you have one in your emergency kit (and we recommend purchasing one if you can).
See Our Dentist
After you’ve done what you can when it comes to first aid and tooth preservation, you need to get your child into our office to see our pediatric dentist as quickly as possible. A knocked-out tooth can often be reinserted into their gums if you get to our dentist within an hour or so.
