Interceptive orthodontics, also known as Phase I orthodontics, is a proactive approach to addressing dental issues early in children. This form of treatment typically begins between ages six and ten, during the mixed dentition phase when both primary (baby) teeth and permanent teeth, coexist. Early intervention can significantly reduce the severity of orthodontic problems that may arise later.

The primary goal of interceptive orthodontics is to guide the development of the jaw and bite to ensure proper alignment. Issues like crossbites, overbites, crowding and spacing are more manageable when addressed early. For instance, if a child’s jaw is too narrow, it may hinder the eruption of permanent teeth. In such cases, a palatal expander, a common Phase I appliance, gently widens the jaw to create more space.

Phase I braces are sometimes used to reposition misaligned front teeth or maintain the alignment of permanent teeth as they erupt. Other appliances, like space maintainers or habit breakers, can also be employed to prevent or correct specific habits like thumb-sucking that could affect dental alignment.

Phase I orthodontics does not eliminate the need for future orthodontic treatment. Instead, it lays the groundwork, reducing the complexity and duration of later treatments, often referred to as Phase II orthodontics. During this second phase, braces or clear aligners fine-tune the alignment and ensure a healthy, well-aligned smile results.

Parents should consult a pediatric dentist or orthodontist if they notice early signs of dental misalignment or developmental concerns. An early assessment can reveal the benefits of interceptive orthodontics and create a plan to help children achieve healthy smiles that will last a lifetime. With timely intervention, this two-phased approach can enhance oral health, function and confidence in our young patients.
